The United States has founding documents the Declaration and the Constitution.
This is what the documents state about God

The Declaration
Assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them

The Constitution nothing.
Amendment one deals with establishing a religion such as a notional on or denying one.
If a town of people make a religious town on private property the government may not stop this if the town becomes public the government does not have the right to remove historical religious items such as voodoo statues crosses stars which indicate the history of the city and how it was built by private citizens. By tearing down these items the government is violating the first amendment. .
